Brief Local History of New Cross
The area of New Cross used to be known as Hatcham, an ‘Anglo-Saxon name meaning’Hacci’s Village. Another possible meaning is ‘the village in the clearing by the woods’. In the eighteenth century, travellers who wanted to pass through the road were required to pay tolls at the turnpike gates. The particular gate at Hatcham was called New Cross Gate after a local public house named the New Cross Inn which stood nearby. The land was bought in 1614 by the Haberdashers Company. The company developed the land by building houses and by founding a boys’ and girls’ grammar school there, the money was provided by a charity founded initially by Robert Aske.

The original village of Lewisham stretched along Lewisham High Street the ancient parish church of St Mary. The name Lewisham derives from ‘Old English’ Ham, meaning a village. In ‘olde’ English the word ‘Leah’ means ‘the clearing in the wood’. Lee was previously a separate parish to Lewisham although a markedly smaller area. Lee was made up of several hamlets, ‘South of Lee Green’ was area consisting of plant nurseries, there were also areas where watercress grew along the riverbank of the River Quaggy. The poet Ernest Dawson (1867-1900) originated from Belmont Grove and the publisher Stanley Unwin is said to have lived in Handen Road. He took a big gamble in his career by publishing a book by J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ which was not deemed to be a commercial success, the gamble paid off!

Hither Green was one of several well known greens in Lewisham, near green, Hither Green and Further Green. Hither Green was a wooded area throughout the Middle Ages but the by the middle of the eighteenth century, most of the trees had been cut down:( In 1896, many of the roads were given Scottish names by Archibald Corbett including the land he gave to build St Andrews church, Patron Saint of Scotland. Brief Local History of Forest Hill
Forest Hill was originally a wooded area with a small number of inhabitants up until the middle of the nineteenth century. A railway line was built along the route of the old canal in 1839. A short time later trains were run along the route powered by a new form of vacuum technology, it was called the Atmospheric Railway! Queen Elizabeth I had a picnic on One Tree Hill on the 1st May 1602 beside a large oak tree henceforth known as the Oak of Honour. This is where the names Honor Oak Road and Honor Oak Park came from, fascinating! The author Jim Connell (1852-1929) who wrote ‘The Red Flag’ lived in Stondon Park Road, Forest Hill. .

Brief Local History of Downham SE12 & BR1
Downham means ‘the village on the hill’, although until the 1920’s there were no houses in Downham. In 1923, London County County Council bought 600 acres of farmland between Catford and Bromley as a compulsory purchase and decided to build a new housing estate in that area. Many of the local names were taken from the legends of King Arthur including Malory School. As time went on transport to London was made available either by taking a train from Grove Park or by a tram from Southend. The new library was opened in 2006 and included a leisure and health centre. .
